Mercedes-Benz' SLS AMG Black Series has officially landed at the Los Angeles auto show.
The car will stay true to the successful Black Series formula of
removing weight while adding power, but in this case the modifications
should be enough to allow it to take on cars like the Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Super Trofeo and Audi R8 GT. The SLS AMG Black Series will represent the final and greatest chapter for AMG's magnificent 6.2-liter V8, which is currently being phased out in favor of a more fuel-efficient twin-turbo 5.5-liter mill.
As such, it will deliver 622 horsepower and 468 lb-ft. of torque in
this application. Combined with a beefed up AMG seven-speed dual clutch
transmission, the SLS AMG hits 60 mph from a complete stop in just 3.5
seconds before topping out at 196 mph.
The upgraded engine now revs to a staggering 8,000 rpm limit.
In addition, the Black Series is designed to handle curves and corners
better with a wider (0.8 inches front, 0.9 inches rear) track and an AMG
rear axle differential lock. A stiffer suspension and two-piece ceramic
brakes should make the most of available power.
To stand out from "mere" SLS AMGs, the Black Series features matte
black forged alloy wheels - staggered at 10x19" front and 12x20" rear -
and substantial carbon fiber trim. Those so inclined can further carbon
fiber-ize their SLS AMGBlack Series cars with optional exterior mirrors,
engine covers and interior bits. Notably, those interested in saving
even more weight can delete the automaker's COMAND infotainment system.
Overall, curb weight is down to 3,417 lbs.
