Goodbye Moto! Motorola to shut shop in India, Asia Pacific

 

Goodbye INDIA :- Motorola is shutting down its operations in India and across Asia Pacific, industry sources have confirmed to BGR India. The news comes after Motorola Mobility CEO,  Dennis Woodside, confirmed the company would be letting go of 20 percent of its workforce and would be shrinking its India operations. Emails and calls to Motorola Mobility’s APAC region PR and employees at Motorola Mobility India remain unanswered.

From the way things look like, only those employees who are working on projects related to products in the US will retain their jobs. Motorola will continue to sell its products till stocks last and its service centers will continue to function. Independent real estate companies have confirmed that Motorola’s Hyderabad R&D facility property has been put up for sale.

In the APAC region, the company will shut shop in all countries but Australia and Korea. It turns out that the APAC region bore the brunt of Motorola’s decision to close a third of its 94 global offices. Woodside had earlier indicated the company would exit unprofitable markets, stop making low-end devices and focus on a few cellphones instead of dozens.

Japan toilet maker unveils 'poop-powered' motorbike

Japanese toilet maker eco-friendly motorbike:

A female rider drives Japanese toiletry goods maker Toto's eco-friendly motorcycle Toilet Bike Neo, which uses bio-gas from discharges of livestocks or waste water during a demonstration run for their domestic green campaign in Omiya, suburban Tokyo on August 29, 2012. Toto made a demonstration of a Toilet Bike, a motorcycle equipped with a toilet bowl which moves on biogas that are, not made from a driver's wast but from livestocks'. 

Created by Japan's leading toilet makers TOTO, the energy efficient bike certainly meets the motor industry's demand for more climate friendly vehicles.

Talks to turn the ambitious project into reality have been on-going since 2009, with the latest version of the 'Toilet Bike Neo' making its debut at s showroom in Fujisawa, near Tokyo, on Thursday.

The environmentally friendly three-wheel 250cc motorcycle features a specially customised toilet-shaped seat that runs on bio-fuel from the discharge of livestock or waste water.

Despite the eye-catching seat, TOTO is keen to point out that the motorcycle does actually not run on the rider's waste.

'Toilet Bike Neo' does not have the mechanism to run on the rider's waste,' explained the company in a blog post.

'It runs biogas fuel (fertilised, purified and compressed livestock waste and household wastewater) provided by Shika-oi Town in Hokkaido and Kobe city.

'Therefore, the Neo rest seat does not function as a toilet, and has been created for promoting TOTO's environmental efforts.

'TOTO has set up the project to inform everyone about what we have done in the past, and what we will do in the future.'

Hyderabad-based tech products manufacturer Celkon has launched a new tablet for the Indian students with embedding apps like My Tutor and more. Dubbed by the name of Ee-Tab( CT 1) , the tablet will cost around Rs 6,450.
Commenting on the development, reportedly the company officials said in a statement, “We have tied up with third party app developers for using some of these apps, For geeks, the 7-inch screen device comes with 512 MB RAM and 1.2 GHz processor. It is build on Android 4.0.3 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and contains 4 GB of internal memory with provision to expand up to 32 GB. Users can access the wireless networks using WiFi and 3G dongle options.”
Further the unique Tutor app in the tablet will help student in carrying data and question papers for those, appearing for national common tests for engineering and management.
Addressing the press at the conference, Y Guru, managing director, said the company has plans to sell one lakh tablets by December-end. “We are coming out with three more models in the next two months. One of them will have the provision to insert a sim card. It will be priced at Rs 1,000 more,” he added.

 Big, Bigger, Biggest? Sharp to introduce 90” model at IFA 2012

Marking the launch of its latest large screen model, Philipp Schmidt, Product Manager Consumer Electronics at Sharp says it is time for consumers and retailers to forget the old rules about viewing distances. We asked Mr Schmidt what the main thrust of Sharp’s presence at IFA this year will be...

It will be similar to what we did last year... big screens will once again be our primary topic. Last year we introduced 60, 70 and 80-inch screens, and this year we will be focusing on the introduction of the 90-inch model, which completes the range. This will be our main story for IFA 2012.

One of the problems with selling big TVs is that people tend to only upgrade by a certain, relatively small percentage compared to their previous TV. How are you countering this on the shop floor? What kinds of ideas do you have for retailers to help them sell these bigger models?

What we have found is that when you position the screens next to each other, people are able to get a clear idea of dimensions. Then when you also show them smaller sizes such as 32 or 46-inches, they have a much clearer idea about the real benefits of the larger models.

How have sales been going in the very big sizes over the last year?

There has been a significant increase. For the general market, sales of TVs of 50-inches and above are up by between 100-120%, but for Sharp, sales in the 60” and above category have increased by 400%, and our growth is currently continuing at that level.

What advantages does Sharp have in the manufacturing of these large LCD TVs?

We have the production facility at Sakai, which is able to produce over 500,000 LCD TVs per month when it is running at full capacity, and it can do this thanks to being able to produce 9 meter-square sheets of mother glass, the largest in the world, from which we cut out the TV screens. This is why we are able to make such big screen sizes at affordable prices.

Even though sales of big screens are going better, what still needs to be done in terms of educating retailers?

Optimum viewing distance from the screen is one area. Five years ago, we were told that there was a formula, like three times the height of the TV is the ideal distance, but these days TVs have much higher resolution, as well as being connected to devices like Blu-ray Disc players, so that idea is really rather out of date. We need to show retailers that you can get much closer; as little as three meters away for an 80-inch screen. We tested this with consumers, and they were unanimous that there was no loss of quality, quite the opposite, in fact, they were amazed by the richness and depth of the image.

Will we be seeing the 4K TV available to the public this year?

I’m not sure. I think next year for Europe is more likely. But we will be showcasing our special 2K and 4K technology on the stand this year. It’s not just about increasing the number of pixels, you also need a special kind of processor that is able to calculate and cope with all kinds of inputs from low through to high-resolution images.

LG’s UD 3D TV is the company’s response to growing consumer demand for larger, more immersive home TVs with greater functionality. The UD 3D TV introduces a number of new smart features with the aim of providing greater convenience and simpler interaction.

 

LG’s UD 3D TV also features a 2.2 Speaker System consisting of two 10W speakers and two 15W woofers, which reinforce the sound to produce an audio experience that  complements the  visuals produced by the massive screen, creating a theater-like experience in the home.

LG’s 84-inch UD 3D TV will roll-out in North America, Europe, Asia, and Latin America starting in September. Visitors to IFA 2012 will be able to experience the TV for themselves at the LG Electronics stand in Hall 11.2 of Messe Berlin.

The tablet has a very good build quality and looks great because of its rounded edges and glossy shell. But the high-gloss won’t last long and will tend to tarnish in no time. The front features three capacitive buttons for Home, Back and Menu, but we noticed the icon for the home button is either misprinted or deliberately marked with four boxes which usually denote the app drawer. Towards the top right is a small status LED which illuminates green for use and red for charge. We did note that this LED turns red whilst charging, which is normal, but remains continuously lit in green even if the device is in use or in standby mode and only turns off when you power off the tablet. This phenomenon can actually drain the battery to quite an extent when in standby mode.
